**SPOILERS**
I finally went to see this today. (Again, a few minor spoilers here)
I left with mixed feelings. It had action, interesting characters, a potentially decent plot but in the end, it fell flat for me. I think this was because the character of Apocalypse was poorly done. In the comics (yes, I'm one of those nerds) Apocalypse was fearsome and was not only incredibly powerful, but he seemed to have a master plan. He was of genius or nearly genius level intelligence and was always several steps ahead of his enemies.
The Apocalypse of the movie was very two-dimensional, which, given the potential for this character, was a real let down. Instead of using him to create a longer, multi-film story arc, he just filled in as the bad-guy-dujour.
I spoke with Chris Claremont once about the new direction the X-Men films have taken and he seemed ok with it, but then, alternate timelines was a device he used so why not, right? They've reinvented a number of characters and the relationships those characters have with one another and that's been done well (I like the new, nicer Mystique for some reason. Or maybe it's just because I have a crush on Jennifer Lawrence. I don't know)
In any case, it's worth going to see in the theaters simply because it's a Marvel superhero film and those are always best on a huge screen, but you might want to do what I did and catch a matinee and save a few bucks.
Oh, and Sophie Turner as a young Jean Grey was excellent casting. This was no Sansa Stark character. She really went balls out at the end. (Phoenix, anyone?)
