Hello,
I began taking some writing classes a little over a year ago. The initial motivation was to brush up on my writing skills for a non-writing type of blog that I have not posted to in some time, and just in general. But after that first class something inside me had awoken. I wanted to write for the sake of writing. It made me feel good and right so I continued on. I took a few more classes and sort of went where they took me, which ended up being fiction writing. Something that is pretty new to me and that I’d never really thought about pursuing. But there you have it - sometimes letting yourself “just go with it” deposits you into unexpected places.
I certainly have quite a ways to go in terms of my abilities involving the craft of writing (frankly, even my grammar and punctuation is a little uncertain at this point - like I’m not even sure if I should have just used that comma), but I’m hoping that if I continue reading, writing, and taking classes that I’ll eventually improve.
My most pressing goal with my writing right now is to develop a solid writing practice. And I would be delighted to hear any suggestions or examples of what works for others in this group. I’m sure that we are all familiar with the “million other things to do” scenario and I’d really like to find a way to make my writing a priority.
The other stuff: I currently live in the outrageously over-priced, but exceeding beautiful, city of San Francisco. I live with three men - two six-year-old ones and one forty-six-year-old one. I’m in my early forties - 43 to be exact - and experiencing (what seems to be) all of the normal mid-life crisis hurdles. I worked as an accountant for many years but sort of hated it. My degree is actually in horticulture. Weird, I know, but it’s a long boring story. I left accounting to pursue something “more creative” but didn’t get very far before I had my twin boys. So I had no real job to go back to after they were born and (obviously) plenty to keep me busy with them. So here I am. My boys are in school now and I'm attempting to pursue something that I actually like.
I’m looking forward to being part of this group - to getting and receiving feedback and sharing ideas and suggestions, so that we might all have the opportunity to improve our writing.
