I just submitted my first short story today, and only just now saw this link, so I read it with some trepidation, as you can imagine! I think that I managed to avoid all those mistakes, although now I'm starting to wonder about all of them. Was the ending good enough? The beginning? Or for that matter, the middle? (Yeah, pretty much have to get all of those right, don't you?) Well, we'll see.

That was an interesting read, Chris. I loved the nod to J.K.Rowling, and the way he summed it up. ~> "Agents and publishers truly are impressed by evidence of wins in major contests. They show you're a professional – the kind of writer who gets published. What other kind would they want to deal with?" Just makes a lot of sense. I think his 7 tips are pretty basic tips for a story in general, but all good tips to remember. After all, who wants to read a story with poor writing or structure or boring beginnings, etc. I just submitted my first short story today, and only just now saw this link, so I read it with some trepidation, as you can imagine! I'm hoping to get another story out and submitted before I hear back from this one, since odds are that it will be rejected, and this way I will already have another pot on the stove, so to say. But work is kicking my butt this week, plus I'm planning my birthday party for next weekend, plus I"m falling behind on blog posts / flash fiction challenges, so I'm not sure how much short story writing and editing I'll get in.

Omg Happy early birthday!! I understand that struggle. Sometimes, Life really gets in the way of writing and blogging, but sometimes, you need to let it happen. Hopefully, after you come back from your birthday party, you'll be re-energized and ready to tackle everything

Omg Happy early birthday!! I understand that struggle. Sometimes, Life really gets in the way of writing and blogging, but sometimes, you need to let it happen. Hopefully, after you come back from your birthday party, you'll be re-energized and ready to tackle everything Actually my birthday is today, so THANKS! I pushed my party off to the following weekend so it wouldn't be competing with graduation weekend. But wow, I still have an awful lot of work to do between now and then, plus plan and cook for the party, plus clean... Ack!
